Stomata are the main openings that control gas exchange between plants and the atmosphere; they are critical for photosynthesis and exert a major influence on global carbon and water cycles. Dominique Bergmann from Stanford University has made seminal contributions on the regulation of stomatal development and patterning in Arabidopsis leaves. Her group discovered several genes that play crucial roles in these processes.
