2017 Summer Institutes, July 10-28 (registration deadline March 3, 2017)

Students from a wide range of backgrounds attend the Summer Institutes to learn state-of-the-art methods for analyzing biological data.

With such a diverse group, we want to be sure to reach every corner of campus with information about our scholarship program.

So spread the word to students, postdocs and anyone else who might be interested in Summer Institute registration and travel scholarships.

Last year, scholarship applicants ran the gamut from biostatistics, epidemiology and public health to veterinary science, environmental health, artificial intelligence, even business administration.

Select a Summer Institute to explore dozens of available modules and to access the online scholarship application.

The priority deadline for scholarship applications is March 3. Applications received after this date will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Swiss-South Africa Joint Research Programme

Swiss-South Africa Joint Research Programme

We are pleased to inform you about a new call for proposals within the Swiss – South African Joint Research Programme (SSAJRP).

For the cooperation period 2017 – 2020, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa have issued a call for joint research projects (JRPs) in the following thematic areas:

·         Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being: from new tools to systems understanding

·         Sustainability, focusing on the following fields: Environmental Sciences, Engineering and energy-related issues

·         Social sciences and humanities (including law) in the context of current and coming societal challenges

·         Methodologies and technologies for data intensive applications

 

Deadline is 31 May 2016.

 A total budget of CHF 4.2 million is available in Switzerland. The maximum budget allowed for a project on the Swiss side is CHF 350’000.

 The available budget will enable funding of up to 12 joint projects.

The projects will be supported for a duration of 4 years.

 

Proposals are to be jointly prepared by Swiss and South African applicants. They must be submitted by the Swiss main applicant to the SNSF via its electronic submission system

(mySNF, www.mysnf.ch). South African partners can have access to the electronic submission system through their Swiss partner.

SCOPES programme (Scientific co-operation between Eastern Europe and Switzerland)

Eastern Europe: SCOPES

The SCOPES programme (Scientific co-operation between Eastern Europe and Switzerland), which is financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation (SDC), promotes scientific co-operation between research groups and institutions in Switzerland and Eastern Europe.

The current programme phase, SCOPES 2009-2012, has a total of CHF 16 million available and includes the following instruments:

Joint Research Projects (JRP)
JRP provide funding for researchers from partner countries to carry out innovative projects with Swiss colleagues on specific problems in all areas of investigator-driven research. Research is carried out at the Eastern European and Swiss research facilities involved; however, reciprocal visits and short stays in Switzerland for researchers from Eastern Europe are possible.

Institutional Partnerships (IP)
IP are intended to contribute to the development and modernisation of institutional aspects of research and teaching institutions in Eastern Europe, and to increase their attractiveness and international competitiveness by improving basic overall conditions. They do not directly fund research projects.

Preparatory Grants (PG)
PG facilitate the elaboration of proposals for JRP and IP. They provide scientists from the partner countries and from Switzerland with a financial contribution towards the costs of a meeting to prepare and elaborate a JRP or IP proposal.

Valorisation Grants (VG)
VG are designed to increase the impact and sustainability of research results generated from JRP and IP.

Conference Grants (CG)
CG provide funding for travel and accommodation for researchers from partner countries to participate in international scientific conferences held in Switzerland. This instrument is not connected to a JRP or IP.

There are no specific thematic requirements. However, the JRP and IP must, besides having scientific quality, show potential for development possibilities (capacity building) for the Eastern European partner(s).

There are two categories of partner countries:

  • A first group (West Balkan States, South Caucasus and Central Asia as well as Moldavia and the Ukraine)
  • A second group (Eastern European members of the EU as well as Croatia and Russia).

Bilateral projects (JRP et IP) are only possible with partners of the first group. Tri- and multilateral partnerships can be launched with countries from both categories, whereby at least half of the Eastern partners must be from the first category.

The financial means are mainly earmarked for the Eastern European partners. However, on the Swiss side, the co-ordination costs will be covered. The amount of funding per project depends on the number of Eastern European partners.

Bourses d’échange/Exchange grants – Indo Swiss Joint Research Programme (ISJRP)

L’Indo Swiss Joint Research Programme (ISJRP) a lancé son 4ème appel à projets pour des bourses d’échange. Nous vous remercions par avance de faire suivre ce message à tout doctorant et à tout scientifique en Suisse ou en Inde que ceci pourrait intéresser.

Deux possibilités de financement existent pour toutes les branches scientifiques et technologiques:

Research Fellowships (RF)
Ces bourses permettent à des doctorants en Suisse et en Inde d’entreprendre de la recherche et/ou de suivre une formation dans le pays correspondant.

Joint Utilisation of Advanced Facilities (JUAF)
Ces bourses sont destinées au corps enseignant senior et junior en Suisse et en Inde qui souhaite visiter un laboratoire, un département ou un institut du pays correspondant afin d’utiliser de l’équipement spécialisé, des installations, des ressources, des bibliothèques et/ou des bases de données.

The Indo Swiss Joint Research Programme (ISJRP) has launched its fourth call for proposals for exchange grants. Please feel free to distribute this message to any interested Ph.D. students and scientists in Switzerland or India.

Two types of funding are on offer for all science and technology disciplines:

Research Fellowships (RF)
Grants for Ph.D. students from Switzerland and India who wish to conduct research and/or to obtain training in the counterpart country.

Joint Utilisation of Advanced Facilities (JUAF)
Grants for Swiss and Indian faculty and junior staff who wish to visit a laboratory, department or an institute of the counterpart country in order to utilise specialised equipment, facilities, resources, libraries and/or databases.

Release date: September 30th, 2010

FEMS Research Fellowships

Objective

FEMS Research Fellowships are meant to assist young European scientists in pursuing research up to 3 months in a European country different from that in which she/he lives. These grants are intended to support travel and living costs of the Fellow only.

Applicants

Applicants should be working microbiologists, less than 36 years of age. They should be a member of a FEMS Society.
