Scientific Services

The Scientific Service of CIG (SSC) is part of the Central services.

The mission of the Scientific Service is to :

  • Provide research groups at CIG with scientific & technical support and relevant resources
  • Develop new services to fit users specific needs
  • Optimize the acquisition, use and maintenance of internal resources.

Scientific support

  • Bioinformatics support
  • Cell culture – lentivirus production
  • Biofluid assays (clinical chemistry, hormones/cytokines)
  • Genotyping
  • Phenotyping (histology, IHC)
  • Metabolic analyses in mice
  • Consulting (experimental design ; veterinary authorizations)

Technical support

  • Workshop (equipment repairs)
  • On-demand preparation of consumables
  • General technical support

Valorization of internal ressources

  • Equipment (Find-an-equipment inventory, maintenances, purchases)
  • Find a consumable – chemical rooms
  • Cell line biobank
  • Find a service provider for equipment maintenance / repairs / custom design

  • Technical training of Apprentice technicians
  • Technical training of internal users on specific techniques
  • Workshops/courses : Ethics in science, experimental design, soft skills in science.

Scientific support

Users should contact the relevant facilities before starting a project in order to ensure that optimal experimental conditions are chosen.

Suggestions related to policies and procedures:

Terms of use of the services

Access to the services

Scientific services of CIG (SSC) provide support to internal researchers at CIG.

Fee-for-service policy

In principle, invoicing covers running costs except manpower.

For any experiment using expensive consumable, the SSC facility submits a quotation to the user for approval. Users commit to pay the invoice irrespective of the outcome of the experiment and acknowledge that the final price may vary slightly according to difficulties encountered and with the evolution of the service / project.

Acknowledgements & Authorship

In addition to the fees, use of the respective SSC facilities is expected to be acknowledged in users publications. A co-authorship may even be justified for service projects that are time-/ labor-intensive and/or that require substantial scientific input.

Service requests

Users should contact the relevant facilities (cf. abovebefore starting a project in order to ensure that optimal experimental conditions are chosen.

Use of common resources

Following procedures aim at optimizing workflows and central resources management at CIG.

Common stock of petri dishes for bacteria screens

In order to keep track of groups use of the service, users need to record the quantity of petri bags taken, on the log page located next to the stock of petri dishes.

Online booking of common equipment / rooms

Common equipment such as common centrifuges, ultracentrifuges and hoods at CIG must be booked online before use. Booking page under construction.

Repair of common equipment

The SSC coordinates the maintenance, repair and renewal of common CIG equipment. Eligibility criteria for common equipment are set by CIG central services and validated by the CIG direction.

For any repair of a common equipment, please contact before taking any action. Small repairs will be handled internally. Whenever an external intervention is required, equipment managers at each floor will have to get prior approval from SSC before calling the external repair service, in order to ensure expenses coverage by CIG central services

Move an equipment within CIG

The move of equipment within CIG is coordinated exclusively by the SSC staff (please contact before taking any action).

Borrow a tool from the workshop

Tools can be borrowed from the workshop for a limited amount of time, upon request to the workshop manager (please contact – tools cannot be freely taken.

Access to restricted areas

Animal facilities and services related to animal experimentation

Autonomous access to animal facilities at the Genopode requires good practices trainings from

1 – the core animal facility (please contact and then if required,

2 – the mouse metabolic facility (MEF, please contact

Users requesting help for mouse studies  must have an active authorization from the Canton which cover specifically the requested protocols. The staff will be unable to start any experiment beforehand.

Radiosafety, biosafety (C lab, P2 lab)

Access to C-laboratories and P2 lab require an accreditation and a badge access upon completion af a training with certified expert. See radioactivity safety rules and procedures here.

Suggestions to SSC related to policies and procedures

Suggestions and requests for improvements of SSC policies and procedures should be addressed by users to their respective group leaders who will relay them to the SSC  (whenever the request is delegated, a request by email should be addressed by the user with a copy (Cc) to her/his PI).
