IMCB Junior Investigator (IJI)

Date available: June 2013

Application deadline: 1 April 2013

Date posted: 12 December, 2012

The Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) announces the launch of its new “IMCB Junior Investigator (IJI)” program. The program aims to provide opportunities for young scientists with exceptional ability and drive to pursue their own research program. The IJIs must have promising capacity for independent research and scientific excellence, and an exceptional high potential to develop and lead an internationally competitive program in the near future.

Requirements
Candidates will be selected based on their achievements during PhD and/or postdoctoral training, research proposal and a stringent selection procedure (see below). Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree with up to 5 years of postdoctoral experience at the time of application, although priority will be given to those with fewer years of postdoctoral training.

Successful candidate
Each IJI will be given a contract of 3 years with a possibility of renewal for another 3 years. Promotion to a Principal Investigator (PI) position can be considered anytime during the second contract (see below).

Each IJI will be supported with one research technician, adequate funds for consumables, lab space in an ‘open lab’ with standard facilities and two work-stations. Alternatively, if a PI with matching research interest has space in his/her lab, he/she may decide to provide the required ‘bench-space’ for the IJI, if both agree. The IJI will have access to all shared equipment and facilities of IMCB.

Evaluation and future prospects
The IJI contract will be renewed for another 3 years, if the progress and future potential are satisfactory. At any time of the second contract, IJIs who have made excellent progress and feel ready to apply for promotion to an independent PI position in IMCB will be encouraged to do so. The IMCB PI recruitment committee will evaluate the applications.

Application and selection
Applicants should submit their CV, a 3-page research proposal and the names and complete contact information of 3 referees to: Ms. Regine LiQing Zhang
