– Ambizione
Ambizione grants are aimed at young researchers who wish to conduct, manage and lead an independent project at a Swiss higher education institution. The funding scheme would like to promote qualified researchers from Switzerland as well as excellent researchers from abroad. In addition, researchers working as non-professorial teaching staff at higher education institutions are entitled to apply for project funds under Ambizione.
An Ambizione grant comprises the salary of the grantee and project funds. Whereas, an Ambizione project grant contains only project funds. The grants are awarded for a maximum of four years.

– Advanced Postdoc.Mobility
Advanced Postdoc.Mobility fellowships are designed for postdocs who wish to enhance their scientific profile by working at a research institution abroad. In addition to the fellowship, applicants can request a grant for a research period upon returning to Switzerland.

– Doc.CH (HSS)
Doc.CH (HSS) is aimed at promising researchers who wish to write a doctoral thesis on a topic of their own choice in the humanities and social sciences in Switzerland.
Besides the salary of the doctoral student, the grant may include a contribution towards costs directly related to project implementation.

– Projects (all disciplines)
Project funding is aimed at experienced researchers working in Switzerland who wish to obtain funding for a project of their own. The research topic can be chosen freely.
The grants cover direct costs such as salaries of collaborators, materials, travel as well as other expenses.

Innovations in project funding: clearer and more attractive as of October 2016
Aiming to optimise its main funding scheme, the SNSF commissioned a client survey on project funding and set up an internal working group. This resulted in changes aimed at implementing a more effective, client-friendly and attractive project funding scheme for researchers. The changes will take effect as of October 2016, together with the SNSF’s first dedicated regulations on project funding.

– SNSF Professorships
SNSF professorships address young researchers who intend to pursue an academic career and wish to establish their own team to realise a research project.
An SNSF professorship includes the researcher’s salary (assistant professorship level), a research grant, salaries of employees as well as a contribution to infrastructure costs. The funding period is 4 years and may be extended by no more than 2 years.

– R’Equip (Research Equipment)
R’Equip is aimed at researchers in Switzerland who need top-quality, innovative equipment for their research work. The SNSF awards grants for the acquisition and development of large-scale apparatuses in all areas of science.
A grant pays for the acquisition of equipment worth at least CHF 100,000. It generally covers up to 50% of the acquisition costs and amounts to a maximum of CHF 1 million.

– Sinergia
Sinergia promotes the interdisciplinary collaboration of two to four research groups that propose breakthrough research.

– Mobility Grants in Projects
Mobility grants are aimed at doctoral students who wish to improve their scientific profile by going abroad while being employed in an ongoing SNSF research project.
A mobility grant can cover travel and living costs as well as fees for conferences and workshops of up to CHF 20,000. It is awarded for six to twelve months.

– Gender Equality Grant
The gender equality grant is aimed at young women researchers funded by the SNSF. Il offers them additional individualized and flexible support for their career development.
An eligible person receives CHF 1000 per 12 months’ approved project running time. The grant may be used to finance career support measures but does not cover family support measures.

– International Short Visits
The scheme International Short Visits is aimed at researchers in Switzerland who wish to go abroad for a short period or researchers abroad who wish to collaborate with researchers in Switzerland. During the visit, they pursue a small joint research project.
Short visits may last from one week to three months. There are no geographical and topical restrictions. The grants include travel, room and board expenses.

– ERA_NET CHIST-ERA
The ERA-NET CHIST-ERA supports EU research collaborations in information and communication sciences and technologies. This year’s call addresses the following two topics: 1. Lifelong Learning for Intelligent Systems; 2. Visual Analytics for Decision Making under Uncertainty.

– ERA-NET E-Rare on Rare Diseases
The E-Rare network launches its 9th transnational call for funding multilateral research projects in the field “of Innovative Therapeutic Approaches for Rare Diseases”.

– Media courses for researchers 2017
Media training courses are aimed at interested researchers in Switzerland who would like to improve their skills in dealing with the media. Academic researchers need to master the craft of writing non-scientific texts for a large number of purposes, such as adapting a research topic for the general public, preparing content for a website or writing press releases. These communication courses are held in German and French. Due to a lack of demand, the English media training will not be continued beyond 2016.
