Introduction

UNIL is a leading international teaching and research institution, with over 5,000 employees and 15,500 students split between its Dorigny campus, CHUV and Epalinges. As an employer, UNIL encourages excellence, individual recognition and responsibility.

Presentation

The Center for Integrative Genomics of the University of Lausanne invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the group of Aleksandar Vjestica to work in the area of sexual lifecycle in fungi, with a focus on mechanism of gamete-to-zygote transition in fission yeast. The Vjestica lab is an emerging research group and has recently discovered that fertilization between two haploid gametes triggers fission yeast to rapidly activate one parental genome and transition from gametic to zygotic cell fate. Failure in this early gene expression, or its mere delay, impairs the zygote development, leads to mating with additional partners, re-fertilization and consequently, formation of progeny with aberrant ploidy. Since ploidy alterations increase fitness under certain conditions in both non-pathogenic and pathogenic fungi, understanding fungal zygote specification, and associated blocks to re-fertilization, holds relevance not only for developmental but also evolutionary and medical biology. Job information

Expected start date: 01.01.2021 or to be discussed
Contract length: 1 year, renewable 2 x 2 years, maximum 5 years.
Activity rate: 100%
Workplace: University of Lausanne, Dorigny Campus, Center for Integrative GĂ©nomics (CIG, http://www.unil.ch/cig).

Your responsibilities

The candidate will work on the lab project to understand the regulation of gene expression triggered at fertilization and its role in zygotic cell fate establishment. The molecular roles of zygote-specific genes in preventing re-fertilization are of particular interest. The fellow will be given opportunity to formulate and pursue a challenging project within the topic of interest and encouraged to develop as an independent researcher. Work will rely on integrating high-throughput genomics, advanced genetics, microscopy and image analysis.

Your qualifications

In order to complete our team, we are looking for someone with the following qualifications:

  • Dynamic, enthusiastic and dedicated scientist with a PhD in life sciences, interested in working in a highly interactive environment.
  • Expertise should be attested by publications (first-author peer-reviewed research publication)
  • Excellent command of oral and written English.
  • Experience in sequencing data analysis, microscopy and genetics is advantageous.

What the position offers you

We offer a nice working place in a multicultural, diverse and dynamic academic environment. Opportunities for professional training, a lot of activities and other benefits to discover.
